Mother’s Day Craft Ideas

During my years teaching at a day care/preschool and teaching elementary Sunday school classes, I found that boys liked to create craft projects just as much as the girls. In spring months, there are nights where you aren’t able to go outside for activities due to inclement weather. Below are several craft ideas for your Ranger Kids and Discovery Rangers groups. Please be sensitive to the boys in class who may not have a mom. Every boy will have a special woman in his life.

RANGER KIDS

I tried to select craft projects that K-2nd graders could complete with little supervision. If you are the only leader with several boys, you will need crafts that boys can work on with some independence, allowing you to focus on the younger boys in the class.

Construction Paper Flowers

This is a very simple project, using scissors, Tacky Glue, green craft sticks, ½” sparkly pom poms, and construction paper. The boys may have trouble cutting the hearts, so those could be precut. Then, the boys could choose to make a flower with different colored petals.

Flower in Vase

The first link below gives you an idea of what this project could look like. However, to use the templates on this site, you would have to purchase them. I have provided you with free flower and vase templates as an option. You’ll need cardstock (various colors), construction paper (various colors, optional), and patterned scrapbook paper (optional), crayons/markers (optional), scissors, and glue sticks. There are so many variations that you can do with this project that I listed several of the supplies as optional. You can print the templates on white paper for the boys to color and cut out, or you can print the templates on construction or scrapbook paper. This is a great projects to let the boys be creative in how they mix and match the papers.

Paper Plate Calla Lily

Although the supplies are simple, this craft could take a couple of weeks to complete. You’ll need paper plates, straws (green), pipe cleaners (yellow), paint (optional), crayons/markers (optional), and white glue, stapler, or hot glue gun. If you choose to use paint, don’t forget the paint shirts. Using paint, crayons, or markers, you’ll have the boys color the paper plates on both sides. To attach the straw to the plate and secure the plate in the shape of a lily, you can use white glue, staples, or hot glue. At the end of the project, the boys will have one or more calla lilies to take home.

DISCOVERY RANGERS

I tried to select craft projects that 3rd–5th graders could complete with little supervision. If you are the only leader with several boys, you will need crafts that boys can work on with some independence, allowing you to focus on the boys who may need extra help.

Stamped Roses

You can make this into a card like the website says, but you’ll probably need two weeks to complete the projects. You can also make it as a print instead of a card and write “Happy Mother’s Day” at the bottom. You’ll need the following supplies: cardstock (various colors), white paper, sponge cleaning cloths, rectangular kitchen sponges, Q-tips, acrylic paint (various colors), and glue sticks. Don’t forget the paint shirts. The website provides all the instructions on how to cut the kitchen sponge into leaf shapes and how to roll the cleaning cloths to look like flowers. The boys will enjoy making these bouquets.

Flowerpot Craft

This is an easy craft for the boys to complete. You can purchase the templates for this craft from the site below, you can create your own, or you can use the free templates I found. You’ll need the templates, cardstock (red, purple, pink, brown, and white), green craft sticks, Tacky Glue, ribbon (various colors), hole punch, scissors, and markers. The website gives great instructions for each step in the process. The boys can make this into a card as the website suggests or not.

Paper Roses

This project is very easy but looks like the boys spent lots of time working on it. You’ll need the template, red paper, green pipe cleaners, ribbon (optional), and scissors. Not only does the website provide great instructions with photos but it also has the instructions written on it. Once the spirals are cut out for the flowers, the boys can be creative about how they finish the project. They can finish the roses as the website instructs, or they can make several roses and tie the stems with ribbon for a bouquet.

Mother’s Day Card

Here is a cute card for the boys to make for Mother’s Day. The supplies for this card are basic and should be found easily at any church. The supply list said they used a premade blank card; however, you can easily substitute construction paper. You’ll need construction paper (pink, red, and any other colors), white paper, scissors, glue sticks, and any embellishments you want to add. The link below has great step-by-step instructions to create the heart chain that makes the pop-up feature of the card. As the boys decorate their cards with extra paper hearts, stickers, or other embellishments, each will become unique.
