Uniforms

Uniforms play an important role in Royal Rangers and serve as one of the primary methods we employ to accomplish the objectives of our program.  Royal Rangers uses uniforms as a method to:

  • Create a sense of identity and belonging for boys
  • Instill a sense of responsibility and self-discipline
  • Establish a degree of social equality within the outpost
  • Provide boys a way to display their achievements

Royal Rangers groups have the flexibility of choosing from a variety of different options when selecting a uniform.  This flexibility enables the group to select a uniform that best suits the unique needs and interests of their group.  The meeting or event at which they are worn determines the level of formality.  If your outpost has just started or if your boys' economic condition is such that the uniform is a hardship, work to get your boys uniformed in stages. Start by getting the boys in the less expensive, special uniform, such as Royal Rangers T-shirt and blue jeans. Then if your outpost chooses to use them, move forward to the utility uniform, and even the dress uniform for special occasions.

Every adult leader, boy, and young man is encouraged to wear the Royal Rangers uniform.  The national Royal Rangers ministry empowers the local outpost to select the uniform option that best reflects the culture and personality of their church and community, and enables them to attract the greatest number of members.  We encourage every church to measure the value of the utility uniform shirt with blue jeans and/or optional Ranger Tactical pants. Whichever uniform is chosen by the outpost, it will be recognized at all local, district, and national events.  (Note: Leaders choosing to serve on staff or as instructors will wear the prescribed uniform(s) of each event.)

Uniform Options

The following uniform options provide outposts with a variety great deal of flexibility in choosing a uniform that best meets their unique needs and preferences.

  • Utility Uniform - the standard, recommended uniform for all leaders and boys, with official insignia displayed
  • Special Uniform - a custom uniform option defined by your group, with no Royal Rangers insignia or awards
  • Dress Uniform - a more distinguished uniform option for adult leaders, Expedition Rangers, or Adventure Rangers
  • Formal Uniform - the most formal uniform option for use at award ceremonies or other more formal occasions (for adult leaders only)

Insignia Patch & Pin Placement

Insignia serve to represent the awards an individual has received or to identify an individual as a member of a particular group or groups within the program. Due to their significance in the program, some insignia are restricted and can only be obtained through your district or the national Royal Rangers office. See the Restricted Products & Awards page for details.

Patch and pin placement is the same for all Royal Rangers uniforms utilizing a khaki shirt.  Some patches are standard, required items and must be worn on all uniform shirts while other patches are optional.  For details concerning the placement of patches and pins on a uniform please refer to the following sources.

Awards Vest

The awards vest is a supplemental uniform item which allows boys to display all of the awards, training patches, and event patches they have earned in their current age group. The vest may be worn with the Utility Uniform or any special uniform as prescribed by the outpost.

For patch and pin layout on the awards vest, refer to the material in Appendix B of the boy's handbooks or our patch & pin placement guides noted above.

Uniforms for Ladies

Women leaders in Royal Rangers are encouraged to wear the same uniform as the male leaders in their outpost. Uniforms for ladies take the same format as those for men with the following exceptions:

  • Utility Uniform:  The adult utility shirt and tactical pants are only produced in men's sizes. However, ladies who choose to wear the utility uniform may wear the men's shirt (tailored to fit as needed) with navy tactical pants or a navy skirt of at least knee length.
  • Special Uniform:  Ladies wear the special uniform as defined by their outpost
  • Dress Uniform:  Ladies do not wear the dress uniform
  • Formal Uniform:  Ladies may wear charcoal grey slacks or skirt. A solid navy scarf is worn in place of the men's tie.
