As we dive headlong into another busy season of ministry, it’s so easy to get caught up in the "how" of what we do. We’re looking at merit requirements, reviewing lesson plans, and filling our calendars with powwows and campouts. But in all that activity, we have to pause and ask ourselves: Are we remembering the “why?”
In our latest podcast episode, John and I talked about this very trap. It’s a subtle one. You start with a passion for reaching boys, but over time, the program can start to feel like the point. We begin to value the patches over the boy and the schedule over the spirit. If we aren't careful, we can become leaders who are experts in the mechanics of Royal Rangers but have lost sight of the mission.
Our "why" isn’t to produce boys who are good at knots or archery though those are great tools. Our "why" is to provide Christlike character formation and servant leadership development. We are here to mentor the next generation of men.
When we say "evangelize, equip, empower," those aren't just words on a poster; they are the roadmap for a boy’s soul. Every activity we do must be "fun with a purpose." If the fun doesn’t lead to a conversation about Christ or if the skill doesn’t build a boy’s confidence in his God-given identity, then we’ve missed the mark.
How do we keep the main thing the main thing? It starts with intentionality.
In all my years in Rangers, I’ve seen that the leaders who stay the course are the ones who never lose their "why." They are the men who see beyond this week. They know the boys they invest in are future husbands, fathers, and leaders in the church. They know that what they do today echoes for generations to come and into eternity.
Friends, thank you for your heart and willingness to reach boys and mentor them into Christlike men—even on your hard days. Don't let the busyness of the "how" drown out the beauty of the "why." God has placed you in your church in your community for such a time as this.
