During my years teaching at a day care/preschool and teaching elementary Sunday school classes, I found that boys liked to create craft projects just as much as the girls. In the fall, many parts of the country have beautiful fall evenings with cooler temperatures, so those groups are still able to be outside and do activities. Other parts of the country experience rainy or snowy nights, so they may not be able to do many outside activities. Below are several craft ideas for your Ranger Kids and Discovery Rangers groups. These ideas are meant to offer new, theme ideas to the current curriculum.
RANGER KIDS
I tried to select craft projects that K–2nd graders could complete with little individual supervision. If you are the only leader with several boys, you will need crafts that boys can work on with some independence, allowing you to focus on the younger boys in the class.
Paper Plate Owl 1
This craft is a simple craft that can be completed while you’re waiting for other boys to arrive or as part of class. The basic supplies of paper plates, yellow and orange construction paper, scissors, markers, and glue sticks will let your Ranger Kids make owls that are as unique as they are.

Paper Plate Owl 2
This craft has a few more supplies and can be extended to two weeks if you want the boys to paint their owls. You’ll need paper plates, brown paint and paintbrushes (optional), scissors, glue sticks, cardstock or construction paper (tan, gold, white, and black). Remember to get the paint shirts if you decide to paint.

DISCOVERY RANGERS
I tried to select craft projects that 3rd–5th graders could complete with little supervision. If you are the only leader with several boys, you will need crafts that boys can work on with some independence, allowing you to focus on the boys who may need extra help.
Owl Mosaic
This is a craft that will take two to three weeks to complete. If you are searching for an extra craft because of bad weather, then choose a different one. You’ll need to have a place where the owls can dry. Using different colored beans, tacky glue, and cardboard, the boys can create these cute owls. The best thing about this project is that every owl is meant to be unique.

Owl Button Craft
This craft has a few supplies: buttons (various sizes and colors), glue, hot glue (optional), and card stock. You’ll want to be sure to have large, black and small, white buttons for eyes and small, orange buttons for the beaks. However, the boys can use those supplies to make some unique and interesting owls. Since you may need to glue two layers of buttons, I recommend doing this project over a couple of weeks.

Burlap Owls (no sew)
This can be a quick craft that any elementary boy would enjoy. Although you’ll need to help the boys with the glue gun, the boys will enjoy fraying the burlap square. You’ll need burlap squares, yellow felt, glue gun, and buttons. The website has links to several wooden buttons in different shapes and patterns. If you don’t want to invest in the button, cut various size circles from patterned scrapbook paper or plain construction paper. If you don’t want to use a glue gun, you can try using tacky glue. It will hold the burlap and paper, but it might not hold the buttons.
